Featuring rare archival footage, Nobuko Miyamoto: A Song in Movement is a story of a changing community told through the singular life of one of its most beloved storytellers.

Directors’ Bios: Tadashi Nakamura is an Emmy-award winning filmmaker and the Director of the Watase Media Arts Center, a production company of the Japanese American National Museum. Tadashi was named CNN’s “Young People Who Rock” for being the youngest filmmaker at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival. Now with over 20 years of filmmaking experience,
his films include Mele Murals (2016), Jake Shimabukuro: Life on Four Strings (2013), A Song for Ourselves (2009), and Pilgrimage (2006).

Quyên Nguyen-Le is a queer vietnamese filmmaker born to refugee parents where Chumash and Tongva lands meet (San Fernando Valley, Los Ángeles). Quyên’s film work focuses on the ways histories are deeply felt in the quotidian everyday.

 

This screening will be followed by a panel discussion titled The Politics of Representation: Why It Matters

Join us for a thought-provoking discussion with influential AAPI leaders. This panel will focus on the importance of representation, having a strong voice, and visibility in positions of power across business, entertainment, politics, and social activism. Our speakers will share inspiring stories and insights, highlighting their pioneering contributions and lasting impact within our community. As the fastest-growing minority group in the country, the panel aims to explore how we can use our presence to enhance our influence, achieve greater success, and empower our community through the sharing of our unique stories.

This panel will be moderated by Susan Jin Davis (Al Roker Entertainment) and feature Bing Chen (CEO/Co-Founder, Gold House), Helen Zia (Journalist and Activist), Rob Buscher (JACL Philadelphia), and Quyên Nguyen-Le.
