When the World Changes

Directed by Benjamin Caruccio and Changhee Chun

Jeju Island: often labeled the Hawaii of Korea, the island is a hotspot for tourism and vacationing. This short documentary film reveals the truth about the island… that it was the site of a brutal massacre in 1948, leading to the murder of 10% of Jeju’s native population.

Today in South Korea, this massacre is mainly referred to as the 4.3 Incident. Through discussions with survivors of the incident, Kang Chunhee and Kim Myungwon, the history of the massacre is revealed, as well as its lasting political impacts that still haunt the people of Jeju Island to this day

Stepping Stones

Past and present reflect one another in this trio of short documentaries about islands caught in the web of United States influence, and people living in the shadow of that impact. Covering nearly a century of war, exploitation, and emigration, these stories reflect just a fraction of the breadth of identities and experiences blooming in the many corners of the contemporary world’s most prominent empire. The histories of these countries and communities are ripples in a stream, their present circumstances shaped subtly over all that time.
