PAPA Mini-Residency: Memory, Vein

Memory Vein: The Collected Tapes links the movies we watch and the memories we attach to them through spectators’ commentary over associated scenes Each video contains a scene from a film with one memory narrated over it, like a director’s commentary, only your own. About Memory Vein, Theives writes:

“I’ve been publishing Veins since 2018 and have learned more through this process about parts of myself I had locked away than I could have ever imagined going into this. But I’ve always wanted to use this as a model to be shared, as a method of understanding each other.”

This project is a work-in-progress being developed through Philadelphia Asian Performing Artist’s Mini-Residency program, supported by Asian Arts Initiative and PAAFF. It is planned for eventual presentation as an in-person experience, but has been adapted to a live-stream format due to the realities of COVID-19.

Chantal Vorobei Thieves creates to understand what is to be and to stay alive. She writes of spies & prophets, Y2K conspiracies, and the relationship between abstraction, perception, and interoception. Recent work include: Memory, Vein and What Would James Baldwin Do? She was a resident at the Queer Materials Lab, Translab, and The Performance Intensive, and Session 9 of the Raw Materials Academie. She is starting a church devoted to the worship & study of art called The Church of the Quarter-Closed Eyes
