A Side of Light

This short documentary examines how Asian American organizations in Philadelphia are working to keep their communities safe from COVID-19 and the racism spurred by the pandemic.

Director’s Statement:
I was inspired to create this piece to focus not only on the adversity but to show resiliency in the Asian community during the pandemic. Growing up, I noticed how racism was normalized towards Asians and it made me self-conscious about my identity as an Asain American. I wanted this piece to showcase the beauty and what it means to be a part of the Asian community but more importantly for people to be proud of who they are. Especially in a time like this, I felt it was crucial to highlight how communities have to stand together and advocate for the social justice happening on all different spectrums.

Directors’ Biography:
Michelle Wu is an Asian American born and raised in Philadelphia. She is the Co-founder of Via Lux Teen Media Collective that uplifts youth voices through the art of filmmaking. She is currently a sophomore at Temple University, The Fox School of Business. Running has played an important role in her life as she ran her first marathon at the age of 16 and has completed three full Philadelphia Marathons since.
