Video, illustration, and animation are combined in this intimate portrait of an international art student studying abroad in the United States.Drawing on artist profile and gender journey films, F1-100 is a transnational meditation through time and space of a young artist carrying a heavy burden.

About the filmmaker: Emory Chao Johnson (they/them) is an artist settled on the land of the Tongva working primarily in documentary. Their approach to filmmaking is grounded in empathy and compassion. “F1-100”, Emory’s latest documentary short, had its world premiere at CAAMFest 2021 and received the Loni Ding Award for Social Issue Documentary. The film was also awarded a special mention at Palm Springs ShortFest and Outfest Los Angeles. Emory is currently working towards completing their MFA at UCLA.
