Cindy has promised her mother that she would spend the summer living with her trickster grandmother. Feeling a little reckless and impulsive, she seeks out a fling with the neighbor, ignoring some of her grandmother’s more troubling signs of dementia. This slice of life dark comedy seeks to thoughtfully portray all the anxiety and comforts of growing up to be just like the women who raised you.

Director’s Bio: Lucy Soutter is a filmmaker based in Philadelphia who wants to live in a dream. Her films “Welcome to My Cyborg Body” and “Venus Man Trap” have screened both in the US and internationally. Her work follows a surreal logic that is equal parts playful and balmy, with a focus on sexuality, repeated cycles, and the silliest cautionary tales. Everyone in her films is sweaty.

Coming of Age at the End of the World
Is the end of the world literal or figurative? Each of these films depicts a moment in time when a character begins to understand the meaning of life – just when everything is coming to an end. So much life is lived in this program: coming to terms with a loss of autonomy, burning along with Hong Kong’s “cursed generation” in an over-surveilled record store, and existing in total isolation while the seasons change outside the window. Yes, the world these characters know is ending, but as with all endings, there is newness and change. These young people are gaining insight into how the old world works – just in time to build a different one.
